I offer a wide range of editorial services on projects across various genres. I'm happy to help with fiction and nonfiction books, short story and essay collections, and children's fiction and nonfiction. I also love working with content for web, magazines, corporate and nonprofit publications, and more.

I use the Editorial Freelancers Association's Editorial Rates as a guideline, but every project is different. Please request a quote for a firm price.

PROOFREADING

Correcting major errors in grammar and mechanics, spelling, punctuation, typos, and formatting, typically for pieces in layout or the final stages before publication.

Some issues I'll correct include:

Typos and spelling errors, including those in names
Extra commas or missing commas
Incomplete or run-on sentences
Incorrect punctuation (type of dash, placement of quotation marks, and more)
Incorrect hyphenation

Some issues I'll flag include:

Confusing sentences or information
Consistency in fonts and formatting
Overflow of text and other errors introduced in the layout and design process

Proofreading

COPYEDITING

Correcting grammar, usage, and style errors, as well as fixing typos and spelling mistakes. Recommending changes for better readability and flow; stronger word choice; and increased clarity.

Some editors use "line editing" to describe these services.

Some issues I'll correct include:

Typos and spelling errors, including those in names
Formatting errors or inconsistencies
Punctuation errors (comma splices, unnecessary commas or lack of necessary commas, semicolon and colon errors, type of dash or quotation mark, etc.)
Incomplete or run-on sentences
Awkward sentence phrasing or structure
Repetitive word choice or sentence structure
Inconsistencies in spelling and formatting
Sudden or unnatural transitions

I provide a style sheet (or work from and add to an existing style sheet) with all copyedits.

Copyediting

CONTENT EDITING

Strengthening copy with attention to organization, sentence structure, and consistency. Recommending revisions such as cutting or expanding sections, changing ineffective words, and reworking for consistent style and tone.

Some editors use "line editing" or "substantive editing" to describe these services.

Some changes I might make include:

Word choice
Organization of sentences and paragraphs
Cutting sections that are too long or suggesting expansion in sections that are too short
Clarifying statements, arguments, or theses
Ensuring consistency throughout a piece
Improving authenticity and believability of dialogue
Establishing and maintaining appropriate and consistent style, voice, and/or tone

Internal inconsistencies

Content Editing

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

Providing overarching suggestions for revision and organization, typically for larger works like books, long chapters, or academic articles. Developmental editing is often done on first or early drafts before copyediting or other detailed edits take place, since the feedback typically provides many recommendations and ideas for revision.

Some suggestions I might make include:

Ideas for generating content or making significant revisions to content
Changes to organization of the piece as a whole and individual sections of the piece
Areas to expand or cut
Adjustments to pacing
In fiction, overarching suggestions to elements such as characterization, voice, and plot

Inconsistencies within the piece
Questions or confusion not resolved in the piece

I provide an editorial letter with detailed feedback and suggestions with all developmental edits.
